Track excited for the spring
Catasauqua track coach Kyle Rusnock always been recognized for his effervescent personality and his enduring positive outlook.
This spring, Rusnock is in true form about his track program. The Rough Riders have had approximately 90 athletes in practice.
“We’re looking really good and probably better than last year,” beamed Rusnock. “We’re super excited, and we will pick up where we left off last year. We have a good core coming back and plenty of impressive newcomers.”
On the girls’ side, Hailey and Heaven Jenkins are expected to excel in the sprints and jumps. Both of them were among the top 10 in those events at districts. Hailey Jenkins was ninth in the 100 and 15th in the triple jump last year at states.
Alivia Bear and Ava Smith are both back in the 800, 1,600,and 3,200. Bear was 21st in the 3,200 at states last year.
Julia Harth and Kelsey Warren both should have a strong season in the 100 and 300 hurdles. Lauren DeLong will look to raise the bar in both the shot put and discus.
Shelby Haldeman and Abigail Antipas are two newcomers who already have caught the attention of the coaching staff.
On the boys’ side, Hammad Jenkins is expected to have a strong season in both the sprints and jumps.
Frankie Pujols and Josiah LaFond as well as Jordan Bradshaw will be back in the 100 and 300 hurdles.
Others expected to make contributions on the track and in the field are Evan Reed, Jonathan Cordon-Pinto, Tyler Limandri, Jyzaiah Bonilla, Peter LaPointe, Manny Balmer, Chase Kratochvil, and Cadeo and Cassius Estronza. Jonah Arancibia should be a force in the throws.
The Roughies opened the season against Notre Dame Tuesday. Rusnock expects the early positive vibes to permeate through the season.
“There was a lot of camaraderie in the first weeks,” boasted Rusnock. “We’re bonding and we’re making a lot of ground.
“We’ll keep working hard, and we’re looking forward to the season.”
