Ten swimmers from the Bethlehem YMCA Stars Swim Team competed against 24 teams from the central region of Pennsylvania in a district meet where 13-year-old Darren Nguyen emerged as a multiple medalist in early March in York, Pa.
Nguyen was the gold medalist in the 50 backstroke (29.17) and the 50 freestyle (25.52) on March 8, his birthday.
Nguyen also won a silver medal in the 100 free (56.60), a bronze medal in the 100 butterfly (1:02.00), and a sixth-place medal in the 50 breaststroke (34.80).
Regarding his first-place finish in the 50 back, Nguyen said, “I was looking at the heat sheet, and this other kid was really good. At first, I didn’t think I would be able to beat him. I thought I was going to get third, maybe second at best, but I out touched him.”
Nguyen, along with Alexandra Yerk, Pablo Dayan, Greyson Geiger, Theo Collins, Nolan Samson, Narayan Lal, Adam Barlow, Teddy Shang, and Jack Amato competed in a state meet in late March in Morgantown, W. Va.
