Library celebrates Dr. Seuss’ birthday

It was a “Seussical” morning March 2 at Whitehall Township Public Library. Children and their parents gathered on the birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel, known publicly as Dr. Seuss, and National Read Across America Day for a special story time at the library, 3700 Mechanicsville Road.

Dr. Seuss was born March 2, 1904, in Springfield, Mass., and died Sept. 24, 1991, in La Jolla, Calif. This year marked what would have been his 120th birthday.

To celebrate his life and contributions, National Read Across America Day - also known as Dr. Seuss Day - occurs on his birthday each year.

Children’s librarian Lorraine Santaliz and librarian Miss Janice, with help from Whitehall High School student volunteers and members of the library’s Teen Advisory Board, launched a fun-filled celebration.

Santaliz read the Dr. Seuss classic “Green Eggs and Ham” to the group. Snacks and a craft project followed, as well as a song and dance led by Miss Janice. All children were invited to make their own white and red striped hat - just like the Cat in the Hat.
