Pates aim to improve

Freedom is looking to turn a corner this year on the baseball diamond. The Patriots finished 9-12 last year, but third-year head coach John Biscoe III thinks this can be the type of year where the Pates can get back into the playoff mix.

The Pates bring back nine players from a year ago, which should give them a solid base of experience heading into the season.

Returning players include Jarred Peluso (Sr. OF); Colin Andrews (So. OF); Michael Cobb (Jr. SS); Matt Heineman (Jr. 3B-P); Michael Horvath (Jr. OF-P); Patrick Kiefner (Jr. C); Ryan Kullman (Jr. 2B-P); John Phillips (Jr. 1B-P); Louis Pagano (Sr. OF); Nate Rathmell (Sr. 3B); Alex Suarez (Sr. DH); Jake Sweitzer (Sr. P) and Chase Walker (Jr. P-1B).

Freedom opened the season with a 4-2 win over Northwestern, but then fell to Abington Heights 12-1 the following day. The Pates open league play on Wednesday against Nazareth.

“Our team hopes for a fun journey this year,” said Biscoe. “With nine impact returners anchoring the roster, our aspirations extend far beyond making districts. We want to challenge the very best and strive to emerge as champions. We now have some experience and have a hunger for success. We have amazing kids both on and off the field as leaders.”
