Trojan girls earn second postseason gold

Easton was seeking an upset and some revenge from a loss in the league playoffs.

For three quarters the Red Rovers were in position to reach those goals.

But Parkland played its best when it mattered most.

The Trojans were trailing late in the third quarter, but took the lead early in the fourth and never looked back to win Friday’s District 11 Class 6A girls title game 47-35 at Allen High School.

“I think it comes down to mental toughness,” said Talia Zurinskas, who scored a game-high 25 points for Parkland. “We’ve been stressing that a lot this season, to be physically tough and mentally tough especially in end-of-game scenarios.”

The tight game saw six lead changes and no team pull ahead by more than six points for the first three quarters.

Parkland was trailing by four points late in the third quarter, its largest deficit of the game, when Sophie Frank scored at the buzzer to get her team within 29-27 heading into the fourth.

A basket from Isabelle Hallal tied the game less than a minute into the final stanza. A three-pointer from Delaney Chilcote put Parkland ahead for good, 32-29 with 6:47 left in the game.

“Throughout the game I didn’t take many shots and my coaches and teammates were on me to take more,” said Chilcote, who made two of her four shots in the game. “I practiced that shot with Madi [Siggins] last night so I was pretty confident in taking it and it worked out.”

Starting with Frank’s basket late in the third quarter, Parkland scored 13 unanswered points to take a 38-29 lead before Easton got its first points of the fourth quarter with 2:35 left in the game.

Parkland sealed the win at the free throw line as Zurinskas made all 10 of her fourth-quarter free throws and all 12 she took in the game.

“It’s nice to make those foul shots, but it was a team effort,” she said. “We played really well as a whole unit tonight.”

The Lafayette-bound guard also went 3-for-3 from three-point range in the game.

“You don’t know how hard she works,” said Parkland head coach Ed Ohlson of Zurinskas. “I leave the gym at 7. I have to tell her ‘you’ve got to be out of here by 7:30.’ She’s there before practice and after practice. She’s not just working on shooting, she’s working on everything. She works hard every day. She’s so much better this year than she was last year and she was a great player last year.”

Parkland went 16-for-18 from the foul line in the game. The team has sealed several playoff wins at the line over the past few weeks.

The title is Parkland’s second district crown in three years. The Trojans also won their first league title since 2006 this season.

“This feels great, especially my senior year I’m going to remember this forever,” said Zurinskas. “We have a board in our locker room. Throughout the season we’ve checked off every box. It’s going to feel great checking off that box.”

Parkland (26-2) advances to the state playoffs. The Trojans will host District 1’s 10th place team, Downingtown East, Friday at 7 p.m. in a first round game.

“I think we’re pretty confident,” said Chilcote. “We just won two titles and we think we have momentum going into it.”
