Parkland girls swim team wins fifth straight D-11 title
Make it five in a row.
The Parkland girls swimming and diving team added a fifth straight District 11 championship to its season this past weekend.
Not only is it five straight, but the Trojans have won 15 of the last 16 and 23 of the last 25 district championships. Parkland beat second-place Emmaus 431-406 in the team competition.
Senior Sophia Cerimele had a record-breaking performance at districts when she won a gold and a silver in individual events and was part of two gold medal relay teams.
Cerimele set district records in three events. Her weekend started when she was teamed with freshman Sydney LaBaugh and sophomores Kelsey McPeek and Milla Hahn on the 200-yard medley relay team, which won gold with a record time of 1:44.04, which bested the previous mark which was set by Emmaus back in 2019, by nearly a full second.
The 100-yard butterfly saw the previous time of 55.63, which was set by Parkland’s Megan Polaha in 2013, broken twice. Cerimele broke the record with a time of 55.58, but East Stroudsburg South’s Kseniia Luniushina bested Cerimele’s time and finished in 54.31 to officially hold the new record. Not finished yet, Cerimele swam in her third event of the day, the 200-yard individual medley and broke another Emmaus swimmer’s record with a time of 2:03.31, pushing the Hornets Mikelle Masciantonio out of the top spot.
Not a bad day’s work for a swimmer who took a year off from the sport.
“I was hoping that would happen,” said Cerimele. “I definitely knew it was in reach, but I wasn’t sure if I would break it now because I’m not really rested and this was just to kind of see where I’m at for states. I still had a lot of adrenaline from swimming the medley. I kind of felt that it was coming.”
Cerimele not only reset the district records but rewrote the school and pool records with her performances.
On Saturday, Cerimele and classmate Madison Roseman swam with Hahn and junior Julianne Zaffiro to win the 400-yard freestyle relay, the last event of the meet, to put an exclamation point on their team championship.
Cerimele is seeded third in the IM at states and fifth in the 100-yard butterfly.
Hahn will also compete in the butterfly event at states after finishing third at districts and in the IM where Parkland swept the top three spots. Hahn is seeded 20th at states and bronze medalist McPeek is seeded 23rd. Only gold medalists are guaranteed spots in the state championships, which will be held next week at Bucknell University.
LaBaugh earned a trip to states as a freshman with her gold medal in the 100-yard freestyle. LaBaugh will be seeded 13th in the event. LaBaugh’s time in the 100-yard backstroke was strong enough to put her into the event at states as the 11th seed after winning silver at districts.
McPeek won the 100-yard breaststroke at districts and is seeded seventh for the event at Bucknell in addition to her spot in the IM.
Parkland will also have all three relay teams, the 200-yard medley relay and the 200 and 400-yard freestyle relay teams at states after they swept the gold medals in the district competition. The 200-yard medley team is seeded third with the 200-yard freestyle team seeded 15th and the 400-yard freestyle team will come into states as the 20th seed.
The 3A swimming and diving championships will take place at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA on March 13th and 14th.
