Parkland girls reach District 11 final

The Parkland High School girls basketball team is headed to another championship game.

The Trojans will be playing for the District 11 6A title Saturday evening after defeating Stroudsburg 54-28 in the quarterfinal round last Friday and then beating Emmaus 54-35 in the semifinals this past Tuesday.

Parkland last won a district championship in 2022, which was the program’s first since 2014.

Against the eight-seeded Mounties, the top-seeded Trojans came out firing on all cylinders early and put the game out of reach by halftime. Parkland scored 23 of the 30 points overall in the first quarter and then outscored Stroudsburg 17-2 in the second quarter to take a 40-9 lead into halftime. By that point, head coach Ed Ohlson was able to clear his bench and allow 15 players to get action.

There were 10 Trojans that entered the scoring column on Friday, led by 12 points each from Talia Zurinskas and Madi Siggins. Delaney Chilcote tallied nine points and Aneri McGalla added seven points. Isabella Hallal and Addi Fritzinger both had three points and Lauren Ervin, Sophie Frank, Sarah Car and Katie Sammarco added two points.

Just like it did in the quarterfinal round Friday, Parkland jumped out ahead in a big way early on fifth-seeded Emmaus, scoring 14 of the 18 total points in the first quarter and leading 14-4 after one to put the Green Hornets in a hole. The Trojans then outscored them 15-9 in the second quarter to go into the locker room at halftime on top 29-13. Emmaus never cut its deficit into single digits the rest of the way.

Zurinskas led a trio of Trojans in double figures in scoring. She finished with a game-high 24 points, including four 3-pointers. Siggins and Chilcote both ended with 10 points. Hallal added seven points.

The district title game is scheduled for Friday night at Allen between Parkland and the second seed, Easton, a 52-32 winner over sixth-seeded Liberty in the semifinals. Emmaus will take on Liberty in the consolation game with the winner advancing to states, along with the Trojans and Red Rovers.
