The Emmaus High School girls basketball team overcame a fourth-quarter deficit by outscoring Pocono Mountain West in the final frame to rally and defeat the Panthers 45-43 last Friday night in the District 11 6A quarterfinal round at Pleasant Valley High School.
Trailing 34-30 heading into the fourth, fifth-seeded Emmaus rallied and outscored fourth-seeded PMW 15-9 the rest of the way and held on in the end to take down the Panthers for the second time in as many years, last time coming in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Tournament quarterfinal round last year.
It is the first victory in districts for the Hornets since the 2020-21 season. They have qualified for the tournament four straight seasons. It was also the 11th win in the last 13 games and they improved to 16-10 overall.
Two players finished in double figures in scoring led by a team-high 14 points from Cassie Doemling. Kayla Snyder tallied 12 points.
Emmaus took an early, one-point lead after the first quarter, ahead 13-12, but the teams were tied 23-23 at halftime. The Panthers rallied and outscored the Green Hornets 11-7 in the third quarter.
Mya Cooper recorded seven points. Taylor Griffith and Sofie Laird both contributed four points and each of Gabby DeVita and Olive Whitney ended with two points.
Emmaus will now take on the top seed and rival Parkland for the fourth time this season and second time in the postseason. The two teams met in the semifinal round last night at Allen, a game that was played after Press deadline.
The Green Hornets are guaranteed at least two more games. The winner of the semifinal game clinches a berth into the state tournament, while the losing teams in semifinal games move on to a third-place game with the winners advancing to states.
Cassie Doemling scored a team-high 14 points in the Hornets' district playoff win over Pocono Mountain West.
