Team title, 3 golds for BC

Kollin Rath knows the bull’s-eye is on his back and it doesn’t matter. The Golden Hawk junior has been dominating this season and that run continued at the Northeast Regional 3A tournament last weekend, as Rath won his third straight regional championship following an 8-3 decision over Pocono Mountain East’s Keegan Demarest in the 152-pound finals.

Rath was one of three Hawks to win regional crowns, as Becahi pushed eight wrestlers to this week’s PIAA championships in Hershey, where Rath and teammate Keanu Dillard look to repeat as state champions.

“I can’t really worry about what people think of me going into Hershey,” said Rath about being the target for his opponents. “I just got to focus on myself. I know who I am and what I need to do to win. I was happy with my leg attacks at regionals and I just want to fine tune things going to Hershey.”

Dillard (121), a sophomore, won his second regional crown with a 24-8 technical fall over Parkland’s Blake Dergham in 4:22 on Saturday night.

The returning state champ rolled through regionals posting a fall and two tech falls in his three bouts, as Dillard looks as tough as anyone in the state.

“I thought I did well, but wish I would have converted more pins,” said Dillard. “I felt confident and my gas tank was good. Now it’s back to Hershey.”

Becahi had six finalists at regionals, but the third champ on the night was Shane McFillin, who has broken through this junior season, winning the 145-pound title last week with a 9-0 major decision over Northampton’s Austin Noe. McFillin joined Rath and Dillard with back-to-back gold medals in as many weeks, but can he join them in contention this week at the Giant Center?

“I’m feeling really confident coming off these last two tournaments and want to carry the momentum into next week and finish the season off strong,” McFillin said. “Last year, I had a disappointing finish in Hershey losing in the blood in double overtime and this time around I’m really not thinking about results and just wrestling hard. It’s a stressful tournament, but it’s fun to be out there with your teammates. It’s a cool environment to be in.”

Joining the championship trio in Hershey include Reef Dillard (114, second), Ryder Campbell (127, second), James Deluise (189, second), Marco Frinzi (139, third) and Charlie Scanlan (160, third).

Dillard fell to Northampton’s Gabe Ballard 3-2, marking the second straight week he lost to the K-Kid and the third time overall this season.

After taking third at districts, Campbell reached the final at regionals but dropped an 8-0 major decision to Northampton Trey Wagner. Deluise followed the same path as Campbell, moving up the podium from districts with a runner-up finish following a 16-5 major decision loss to Freedom’s Jared Karabinus.

Frinzi scored an exciting 1-0 decision over Liberty’s Cam Abboud to hold him off in the third period to take third and Scanlan handled Easton’s James Geiger 7-3 in his consolation final.

The Hawks won the team title comfortably with 184.5 points, outpacing Nazareth (168.5) and Easton (155.5) to round out the top three.
