Hurricanes Kam Abboud advances to states

Kam Abboud doesn’t like losing, but after taking fourth at regionals last week, Abboud did have a giant Hershey chocolate bar in his hands to make him feel better.

The Liberty senior qualified for his first trip to the PIAA tournament last week and despite losing to Bethlehem Catholic’s Marco Frinzi 1-0 in the 139-pound consolation finals, Abboud still mustered a smile in the aftermath.

“This was the number one goal going into this tournament,” said Abboud. “I would have liked to place higher, but next week is a fresh slate and I’m proud of how I performed. I have some things to improve upon, but what would I be if I didn’t.”

Abboud reached the semifinal round, but lost to West Scranton’s Michael Turi 5-1, but came right back in the consolation round to pin Bangor’s Aiden Mcnulty in 24 seconds to solidify his spot at the Giant Center this Thursday when wrestling kicks off.

Losing to Frinzi, someone he beat 6-2 at districts the week before, might have been disappointing, but Abboud is always looking for the positives out of a situation.

“I gotta be more active on my feet and urgent on bottom,” he said. “Even losing to Turi, he took me down twice and I think it was me just slowing down on the edge. He had some great shots and is a great wrestler. It’s just minor tweaks, just like at districts, that I need to work on.”

Liberty’s only other medalist on the weekend was Dante Morrison, who took sixth at 215.

Morrison lost in the quarters to Pittston’s Brody Spindler 3-2 and then won two straight in the consolation round before losing to Easton’s Kurtis Crossman 5-3 in the consi-semis to drop him for state contention.

Morrison lost in the fifth-place consolation to Southern Lehigh’s Ryan King 6-2.
