Coplay discusses police personnel, truck traffic
At the March 5 Coplay Borough Council workshop meeting, Mayor Steve Burker spoke in place of police Chief Officer Ryan Emerich, who was unable to attend the meeting.
The police department announced the departure and retirement of Officer Wayne Green, whose last day was March 1, with an official retirement date of March 6. The department personnel and borough council members wished him the best on his future endeavors and a happy retirement.
Emerich enacted a provisional full-time hire to fill Green’s position. State law requires there be three full-time officers on the roster. Officer Amanda Segarra accepted the provisional position until the role is officially filled.
There is also a 32-hour part-time position open, so Emerich is requesting a new Civil Service test be approved. If council approves, the test will take place April 13. The department would then be allowed to advertise and distribute applications available for pickup or on the borough website. Applicants are required to have a current Municipal Police Officers’ Education and Training Commission certification.
Council Vice President Charles Sodl expressed his concerns about enforcement with the ordinance rerouting trucks on Chestnut Street after Burker read the monthly report of traffic violations.
“From the borough’s standpoint, to invest $100,000,” Sodl said, “I don’t accept that.”
Burker agreed, stating the discussion of truck traffic is long overdue.
“It’s something that we’re invested in,” Burker noted. “The whole premise is the safety of our citizens, the safety of the kids getting off the school bus. That’s our main objective.”
Burker assured council that concerns would be communicated to Emerich.
In other business, fire Chief Joseph Britt attended the meeting to advise of normal operations and remind council about upcoming events. The Easter egg hunt is set for noon March 23 and the Egg My Yard event will be March 24. Contact the firehouse for more information about hours, pricing and other logistical information.
During the March 12 general meeting, council will be looking to approve Lehigh County to use 165 Cherry St. as a polling place for the April 23 primary election and the Nov. 5 tentative date for the general election.
Council is also looking to approve moving parks and recreation meetings to the third Tuesday of every month.
Council next meets 7 p.m. March 12 in the municipal building, 98 S. Fourth St.
