Lambert heading to state tourney

Northampton clinched their first state tournament wrestling entrant of 2024 on Sunday as Mylea Lambert took second place in the girls PIAA Southeast Regional at Quakertown.

The accomplishment was bittersweet for Lambert as she had her sights set on adding a regional title to the district championship she had won the week before.

Once again, her finals opponent was Kelsey Gelb of Parkland. After having been pinned in the first period in districts, the Trojan senior took a more cautious approach, and it paid off. Gelb scored a takedown just before the first period buzzer and added a third period reversal and another takedown to win a 6-3 decision.

Lambert summed up the match, “She’s tough. It’s not that she’s a better wrestler. We’re both very good wrestlers and some days I’m going to win and some days she’s going to. She was stronger on her feet compared to last week. Last week I came out so fast, but this week she was more alert.”

“You just can’t take for granted that just because you beat someone one time that you’ll beat them the next time,” she added.

Lambert also faced a tough opening round match. She trailed 4-1 after one period, but got a takedown and 3 nearfall points at the end of the second period to take a 6-5 lead going to the third. A reversal secured the 8-5 win.

Her semifinal result was one that the K-Kid was more accustomed to: a pin in 2:53.

Dani Glaser got the opportunity to compete at regionals after one of the qualifiers from district 1 had to drop out.

Her tournament got off to a rough start when she was pinned at 2:28 in a scoreless bout at that point. She bounced back in consolations with fall of her own against Peniah Boywa of North Penn in 2:11 leaving her one win away from state qualification.

In her consolation semifinal, Glaser was holding her own against Addyson Munro of Liberty when she suffered what appeared to be an elbow injury. She gutted out the rest of the match but fell 9-6. She finished in sixth place after dropping the fifth-place bout to Lily Decker of Pleasant Valley.
