The Liberty girls wrestling team sent a strong contingent of 5 grapplers to the PIAA Southeast Regional tournament at Quakertown on Sunday. Led by the champion at 170 pounds Gracie Haflich, the Lady ‘Canes finished third in the team standings and advanced 4 wrestlers to the state tournament at Hershey.
Haflich followed up on her district title by rolling through the field of competitors from Districts 1, 11, and 12. She was leading Easton’s Maura Case 1-0 at the midpoint of their championship bout when she threw Case to her back and claimed the title with the fall in 3:11.
Haflich had earlier pinned Mariyatta Idris of Penn Wood in 1:42 in the quarters and registered a 14-0 major decision over Isabella Priano of Central Bucks in the semifinals.
Doniya Anwari was pinned by the undisputed top 136-pounder in the state, Haylie Jaffe of Kennett, in the quarterfinals, but won three straight matches to finish in third place.
She pinned Angelina Spachman of Northwestern Lehigh, who had finished second in District XI, in 2:07. Anwari followed that up with a 8-2 decision over Raylyn Schwoyer of Owen J Roberts to clinch a state berth. She pinned Gabrielle Costa of Coatesville in 1:32 in the consolation final.
Symarah Drey and Addyson Munro both finished fourth and qualified, but unlike Anwari, had tense bouts in the blood round. In their matches in the consolation semifinals, Drey beat Annette Barry of Neshaminy 7-6 and Munro took down Danielle Glaser of Northampton 9-6.
Liberty’s other regional qualifier, Ellie Rumbalski, lost her two matches.
The Hurricanes scored 63 team points, behind Parkland (87) and Souderton (72) and ahead of Easton (59).
Overall, District XI had 7 regional champions in the 13 weight classes, 12 finalists, and are sending 23 wrestlers to states. Other DXI schools with multiple qualifiers are: Parkland 5, Easton 3, and Palisades 2.
The girls state tournament will run concurrently with the boys, March 7-9 at the Giant Center in Hershey.
