BC crowns 3; team champs
Bethlehem Catholic took care of business at the District 11 3A wrestling championships last weekend, as the Hawks crowned three champions and advanced nine wrestlers to the Northeast Regional 3A tournament this weekend at Memorial Gymnasium.
Junior Kollin Rath (152) won his third straight district championship, while sophomore Keanu Dillard (121) won his second title, but the Hawks had a newcomer to their District 11 champion wall, as junior Shane McFillin (145) registered a 5-2 decision over Nazareth’s Cade Campbell to win his first district gold.
McFillin used a first period takedown and two nearfall points to build his lead, which was insurmountable for anyone in his bracket, as he didn’t give up a point in the tournament until Campbell scored a reversal in the third period of the finals.
That might have been the only downside of McFillin’s weekend, as he was able to achieve a childhood dream with the gold medal.
“I’ve been coming here since I was young and just hoping that one day I can get on the mat and win a district title,” said McFillin. “After finishing second last year at districts, it got something going in me to work harder in the room in the offseason and just remember the feeling of losing last year. That’s just been driving me harder.”
Dillard also had little trouble in his bracket, posting two falls and two tech falls, including a 21-6 drubbing over Parkland’s Blake Dergham in the championship.
The Hawks defending state champion looks primed to make another run in Hershey and districts was just the starting point.
“I’m definitely feeling very confident right now,” said Dillard. “I’m more mature mentally than I was last year and I’m probably more confident now than I was last year to go out and win a state title.”
Rath, also a defending state champion, picked up three falls at districts before defeating Pocono Mountain East’s Keegan Demarest 5-1 in the finals.
Both Rath and Dillard will be looking to add their third and second regional titles this weekend, while McFillin is hoping he can notch another first this week after taking third at regionals a year ago.
“I want to be a regional champ and states I want to get as high as I can,” McFillin said. “I think I can get it. I believe I can finish high up there.”
The Hawks won the team title with 241.5 points, holding off runner up Easton (224.5 points) and third-place Nazareth (222.5 points).
Reef Dillard (114) and Charlie Scanlan (160) were also finalists, but lost their title bouts. Dillard fell in overtime to Northampton’s Gabe Ballard 5-3 in sudden victory and Scanlan was shutout by Pottsville’s Nick Kunstek 6-0.
Other Hawks to advance to regionals included James Deluise (189, third-place); Marco Frinzi (139, third-place); Ryder Campbell (127, third-place) and Dario Cruz (172, fifth-place).
Louden Hower (107) and Mason Thomas (133) both took sixth, but were a spot shy of qualifying.
Wrestling gets underway Friday at 5 p.m. with the preliminaries with quarterfinals set for 6:30 p.m. Saturday’s semifinals start at 11 a.m. and the finals and consolation finals take place at 4 p.m. on three mats. The top four place winners advance to Hershey.
