Catasauqua Garden Club is informing residents if they are thinking about removing trees from their property or planting new ones, consider the impact these trees have on our ecosystem.

The oak tree, in particular, supports the most butterflies and moths. A single pair of breeding chickadees must find 6,000-9,000 caterpillars to rear one clutch of young, according to Doug Tallamy, a professor of entomology and wildlife ecology at the University of Delaware.

It is also necessary to maintain the area underneath the tree as a habitat with understory plants and to not disturb the area during the winter and early spring while the insects complete their life cycle. In the winter, many remain tucked away in microhabitats such as leaf litter, the stalks of dead vegetation, under tree bark, etc. Don’t be anxious to clean these areas in the late fall or early spring.

Turning some of our yard area back to healthy habitat is possibly the most important, and easiest, thing we can do as individuals to reduce carbon dioxide.
