Whitehall’s Ryan Tran began his wrestling career in a simplistic way.
It all began two years ago with what he sends every day – a text.
“I got started in wrestling through a text,” recalled Tran. “Romello Leibensperger, one of my friends in the varsity lineup contacted me and said the team needed a heavyweight. I decided that I would give it a try.
“Ever since then, I’ve fallen in love with the sport.”
Heading into districts this weekend, Tran has an overall 9-9 record. It has been a major overhaul from his 3-17 slate from a year ago.
“He has worked extremely hard since last season,” said Whitehall had coach Tim Cunningham. “He has improved in his ability, and he started to build confidence. He only had a few wins last year, and this year, we are dependent on him to win matches for the team.
“Ryan has only wrestled for two years, but he will give everything he has for this team. He gave everything he had in the offseason, during this season, and on and off the mat.”
Tran has let his actions speak louder than his words. He has worked on all aspects of his game and has bought into the Zephyrs’ philosophy. He also has realized that it has been a special year for him and his teammates, as the Zephyrs have experienced a steady stream of success.
Tran has concentrated on avoiding being pinned, a victim of 13 falls last season. Through 18 matches this season, Tran has recorded six pins and suffered four of them.
“I personally think we have a great season,” boasted Tran. “We all have wrestled with much heart and grit.
“This season, I have been working on my speed, my shoots, and my ability to figure out how to stay off my back.”
Instead, Tran has increased his attributes this season. He is heading into this week’s individual district tournament with plenty in his favor.
“My strengths have been being fast on my feet, fighting off pins, and doing what’s right for the team,” he added. “I know I have to keep working with districts coming up.”
