Ambitions are high for the Patriots heading into the District 11 3A wrestling tournament this weekend.
With only one returning district medalist from a year ago in senior Jared Karabinus, head coach Anthony Marino is optimistic about what the Pates can push through to regionals this year after sending three wrestlers last year.
“I have in mind a few guys that can advance to regionals,” said Marino. “I think we have guys at 127, 133, 139, 145, 160, 172, 189, 215 and 285 that absolutely have the ability and knowledge to advance.”
The Pates won’t have anyone at 107 this postseason, but the rest of the lineup at Liberty’s Memorial Gymnasium this week includes Ovidius Cusu (114); Ty Johnson or John Bodnar (121); Nick Lyden (127); Anthony Crisafulli (133); Joey Bodnar (139); Keenan Ray (145); Alex Salim (152); Ivan Bonilla (160); Noah MacIlroy (172); Jared Karabinus (189); Elliot Black (215) and Dan Schiffert (285).
Karabinus gives the Pates their best shot at winning a title, as the senior comes in with a 25-2 record. He was in the district championship as a sophomore, but settled for silver before taking fourth last year.
MacIlroy (21-4) will also be in the title mix, as the junior is making his first district appearance in his best season to date.
“Our expectations for the team is to finish in the top eight,” said Marino. “I think Karabinus, Schiffert, Lyden and MacIlroy have a shot at being champions this weekend. Joey Bodnar has a tough bracket but I do believe when he is focused and looking to score he can beat anyone.”
