NHS hockey teams all playing well
Over the years, Northampton’s hockey program has achieved a steady stream of success, and the Konkrete Kids also have had plenty of championship hardware bestowed upon them.
This season, the Kids can experience yet another first in their program.
Beginning this week, the Kids’ varsity, junior varsity, middle school, and youth programs in the Lehigh Valley Scholastic Hockey League (LVSHL) all had first-place seedings for their upcoming playoffs. The Kids have never had all four teams win titles in one season.
“It can be special,” said Brian Ruff, head varsity coach and director of the overall program. “All of our teams have played well all year. This would be a great way to end this year.”
The Kids’ varsity unit (9-0-1) opened up the postseason in a semifinal against Nazareth Tuesday, who gave them their one tie on the season. If the Kids defeated Nazareth, they would face the winner of the Saints- Bethlehem match for the best-of-three final series.
The league finals will begin Thursday for game one. game two is Feb. 27, and game three is Feb. 28.
Northampton’s JV team also faced a Nazareth team in the semifinal round.
As for the varsity, Ruff expected his team to rise to the occasion this season. They are the defending league champions.
“We knew what we had coming back,” said Ruff. “We have seven seniors, and we knew that it would be a good year.”
Senior Lorenzo Tita leads the team in goals with 15 and overall points with 25. Fellow senior Gavin Mollenkof has 22 points, junior Nicholas Kotsch has 21, and senior Bryce Schachte has 19.
Senior goalie Bailen Smargiassi, who has been a two-year starter in the nets has recorded all of the decisions with a 9-0-1 mark and a 2.49 goals against average. Smargiassi recently was accepted into the U.S. Naval Academy, and he will continue his hockey career there.
Other seniors on the team are Tyler Matute, Christian Adam Dumbach.
Ruff knows next year can likely be a rebuilding year, but he apparently isn’t worried. His JV team has won the championship the past two years.
“We’ll lose a strong senior class,” said ruff. “But we like what we have on the JV. We should be able to make a smooth transition.”
In the meantime, the Kids are focusing on adding another chapter to their history.
“Nazareth is a very good team,” he said. “We’ve had some close games with them. Our teams just have to keep working and stay focused.”
