Liberty’s Memorial Gymnasium always plays host to the District 11 3A wrestling tournament, but the Hurricanes hope they can make a splash on their home turf this weekend when the individual postseason gets underway.
The Hurricanes enter districts with confidence and momentum from the way they’ve wrestled over the last month of the dual meet season and head coach Brandon Hall hopes that translates to bigger aspirations for his team this year.
“We believe we are in a good space right now mentally and physically,” said Hall. “The team is eager to compete at districts and stand on that podium Saturday evening. Outside of individual goals, our team goal is to finish in the top five.”
Finishing in the top five would be quite the feat, as the last time they broke that feat was during the 2018-19 season when they finished third.
Liberty’s postseason lineup features Elijah Heimbach (107); Jasiah Pagan (114); Davian Carasquillo (121); Ben Miller (127); Jack Evans (133); Kam Abboud (139); Adriaan Deleon (145); Wesley Koch (152); Daniel Rivera (160); Gionni Rosado (172); Levi Levy (189); Dante Morrison (215) and Seth Kolb (285).
Hall brings back four district medalists from last year, as Pagan, Evans and Deleon all finished in sixth, while Abboud took third.
The Hurricanes only sent five wrestlers to regionals last year, but that number should be higher when things wrap up Saturday evening.
“I think we have several guys looking to advance to next weekend’s regional tournament,” said Hall. “Heimbach, Pagan, Carasquillo, Evans, Abboud, Deleon, Levy, Morrison and Kolb all have goals to place and advance.”
Kam Abboud is one of several Liberty wrestlers who have high hopes of making it to the Regional tournament next weekend.
