January police report shows 110 incidents

Alburtis Borough Council met Feb. 14 for its regular meeting which commenced with standard protocol, including the recitation of the pledge to the flag and an opportunity for public comment.

A resident asked about the conditional use of 121 S. Main St., expressing concern for the over 75% residential building in a commercial building. Mostly, the concerns were over the necessary parking and potential issues with street parking.

Mayor Kathleen Palmer requested an executive session 6 p.m. March 13 in the mayoral report. This was a request from Police Chief Tony Alsleben; however, there will be no vote.

The mayor also reported Alsleben requested the advertising for a part-time police officer position; however, the hire will not be immediate. The Alburtis police wanted to do this to gauge interest.

One of the first items on the agenda was the January police report, which gave insight into local law enforcement activities and community safety trends. There were 110 incidents reported in January. Following this, council approved the meeting minutes from Jan. 31.

Next, council reviewed and approved the bills for payment, alongside the treasurer’s report. Borough Manager Stephen Nemeth reported grant money from the previous year’s projects was received.

The engineer’s report shed light on infrastructure projects and maintenance efforts. Additionally, attention was drawn to the Macungie Ambulance Corps, showcasing 12 incident reports from Alburtis in the month of January.

Under the administrative segment, the first item was a presentation from financial consultant Chris Basile; however, he was not able to make it to the meeting. He will be speaking at the next council meeting.

Next, a written decision on zoning was approved regarding the conditional usage of 121 S. Main St.

Following this, the franchise fees from SECTV amounting to $16,317.02 were received. This is not the full amount the borough will receive, as the RCN fees will be incoming later in the year.

Lastly, Nemeth gave notice of his plan to attend the Pennsylvania State Association of Boroughs Conference, scheduled for June 2-5 at the Hershey Lodge. The council did not have to vote on this item. Nemeth invited all those in the council to attend.

The next Alburtis Borough Council meeting will be 7 p.m. Feb. 28, 260 Franklin St., Alburtis.
