The Lehigh Valley Chapter of the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers held their 39th annual MathCounts competition Feb. 3 at Orefield Middle School.
Springhouse once again represented Parkland well in their performance, both by individuals and as a team.
Eight of Springhouse’s students finished in the top 10 individuals overall.
They were: Vihaan Rao, sixth grade, ninth place; Yihan Li, eighth grade, eighth place; Matthew Huang, eighth grade - seventh place; Derek Yao, eighth grade - fifth place; Lucas Yang, eighth grade - fourth place; Wesley Luo, seventh grade - third place; Oscar Liu, eighth grade - second place; and Eddy Zhang, eighth grade - first place.
This marks Eddy’s third straight individual championship at the competition, a feat not accomplished since Orefield’s Yogeshwar Velingker did the same from 2011-2013 under the tutelage of famed Orefield MathCounts coach Brian Fulmer.
Vihaan Rao was recognized as the top performing sixth grader at the competition, while Wesley Luo was the top performing seventh grader at the competition.
Yihan Li was the top performing female student and earned a course scholarship from Cedar Crest College in her junior or senior year of high school.
Ella Chen, eighth grade was the third best performing female and also earned a scholarship from Cedar Crest College.
The top four competitors - Lucas, Wesley, Oscar, and Eddy - also earned scholarships from various schools in the area, including Lafayette, Moravian, and LCCC for courses in math or science in their high school years.
In addition to the personal achievements, Springhouse’s team of Lucas, Wesley, Oscar, and Eddy also finished first overall in the team competition.
This means they will be going to Harrisburg to represent the Lehigh Valley Chapter at the Pennsylvania MathCounts competition, and they will have the opportunity to defend their state championship from last year.
Derek Yao will also get to participate at the state competition as an individual thanks to his fifth place finish.
