Koberlein takes third at inaugural girls wrestling league championships
The Emmaus girls wrestling team competed in the inaugural East Penn Conference girls championships last Tuesday.
The Hornets took 10th place at the event while sending three wrestlers to third-place matches, all of which met up with tournament champions during their run to the medal round.
Brynn Koberlein won her medal-round match to take third place at the league championships, held at Stroudsburg High School. Hornet teammates Allyson Schwalm and Olivya Kroope both took fourth place after falling in third-place matches.
Koberlein (136) started the tournament by pinning Parkland’s Victoria Lasagna in 2:57 in the quarterfinal round. After falling to eventual champ Jamie Castillo (Easton) in the semifinals, Koberlein pinned Nazareth’s Jasmine Donello in 2:23 in a consolation bout to earn a place in the third-place match.
In the medal round, Koberlein recorded her third win by fall of the day, taking down Emilia Rosa-Lata (Pocono Mountain West) in :51.
Schwalm (155) dropped her opening bout, falling to eventual champ Kelsey Gelb (Parkland), but bounced back with two wins to get to the third-place match.
Schwalm pinned Bethlehem Catholic’s Gigi Ortiz in :38 in her first wrestle-back bout. She pulled out a 7-6 decision over Nazareth’s Taylor Whiteash in the consolation semifinals before falling to Freedom’s Anaya Velez in the third-place match.
Kroope (170) pinned Freedom’s Shayla Ames in 1:19 in the quarterfinals before falling to eventual champ Mylea Lambert (Northampton) in the semifinal round.
Kroope bounced back by pinning Bethlehem Catholic’s Jade Sinchi in :20 in the consolation semifinals. Kroope fell to Parkland’s Shannon Fratus in the third-place match.
One other Emmaus wrestlers, won a pair of bouts at the championships as Destiny Tejada (124) went 2-2, winning her first-round match before falling in the quarterfinals. She won her first consolation bout before falling in her second one.
Hornet wrestlers Sarah Luisi (130) and Nadia Mohammed (235) won one bout each at the EPC Championships.
Parkland took first place in the team standings last Tuesday with 169 points. Easton (162) was second, followed by Pocono Mountain West (135), Liberty (120), Pocono Mountain East (107), Freedom (73), Bethlehem Catholic (68), Nazareth (64), Northampton (62) and Emmaus (57).
The girls District 11 Championships are slated for Sunday, Dec. 18 at Easton Middle School, with action beginning at 9:30 a.m. and finals scheduled to begin at 6:40 p.m.
