EHS girls upset Becahi
The Emmaus High School girls basketball team was playing its best basketball of 2023-24 at the conclusion of the regular season last week. The Hornets won eight of their final nine games to finish the season at 13-9 overall and 10-6 in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference, earning the final spot in the conference tournament.
The Hornets squared off against the top team in the conference in Bethlehem Catholic (18-4, 15-1) on its home court last Friday night and left Bethlehem with an upset victory, winning by double digits, 52-40, to move on to the final four for the second straight year.
Emmaus amassed some revenge over the Golden Hawks, as they lost the lone regular season game this season, 58-40, back on Jan. 18.
The Hornets outscored Becahi in every quarter, 13-11 in the opening frame, 10-7 in the second stanza, 15-13 in the third period and 14-9 in the fourth quarter.
Three Emmaus players finished in double figures in scoring, led by a game-high 16 points from Taylor Griffith. The senior made three 3-pointers, the most made by a player in the game. Classmate Mya Cooper recorded 12 points, going 10-for-11 from the free-throw line. Sophomore Gabby DeVita tallied 11 points, connecting on two shots from long range. Freshman Kayla Snyder added seven points and junior Cassandra Doemling contributed five points. Junior Sylvia Sokolofski rounded out the scoring for the Green Hornets with one point.
Aliyah Brame led the Golden Hawks with 13 points, but she was the lone player in double figures as the Emmaus defense held Becahi in check for most of the game.
Emmaus advanced to the semifinal round and played the fifth seed, Liberty Tuesday night at the PPL Center in downtown Allentown. Results of that game were not available for this week’s Press. The other final four matchup included second seed, Easton, and third seed, Parkland.
The league title game is scheduled for Thursday at the PPL Center as part of a girls-boys championship doubleheader.
