Beller wants another trip to Hershey
Chad Beller already knows the feeling.
For the first time in his high school career, the Catasauqua senior traveled to the PIAA state tournament last year. He didn’t place there, but it was worth the experience.
Since then, Beller has an overall 27-5 record heading into the individual District 11 championships the weekend of Feb. 22-24. He won the 215-pound bracket the Rough Rider tournament, finished third at the Colonial League tournament, fifth at the Coal Cracker Invitational, and won the consolation bracket at the Jim Thorpe tournament.
Beller is confident he can make the trip back to Hershey. He finished third last year in districts and sixth at regionals.
“I feel like I am wrestling the best I have so far,” offered Beller. “I feel like my condition and takedown defense still needs a little bit more work.
“I’ve been working on them both by going for runs and working as hard as possible in the room.”
Head coach Jonathan Reed sees a positive forecast ahead for his grappler.
“Chad seems to be healthy as we get close to districts,” said Reed. “He has been preparing for his postseason run. He appears to be very focused on what he want to accomplish.”
Reed believes Beller can gain some revenge of his previous losses earlier this season in the district tournament and moved forward to the regional tournament and beyond. The senior was pinned by Salisbury’s Jakob Gluc on Jan. 14.
“One of his losses this year happened when he was winning can got caught and was pinned,” added Reed. “He will see him again at districts and will be looking to avenge that loss.
“Regionals will be a very tough tournament with many of the kids back from last year. As with everyone the postseason, he can’t get ahead of himself and needs to take it one match at a time, but we feel he is prepared to go.
“This is his last district tournament, and I know he would like nothing more than to end it with a district title.”
Beller is in unison with his coach.
“I believe I have a pretty good chance of placing first in districts and more,” beamed Beller.
