Trojans drop two games, remain top seed in EPC playoffs

The Parkland High School boys basketball team ended the regular season with its first losses in several weeks.

The Trojans beat rival Emmaus last Friday night for their 10th straight win. They dropped their next two games, the final two games of the regular season, as they fell in a nonconference game against Executive Education Academy Sunday in the Hoop Group Showcase and then in the season finale at Central Catholic this past Monday.

The Trojans and Hornets were neck and neck during the first quarter with Parkland holding on to an 18-14 lead. But the Trojans took advantage in the second quarter, outscoring Emmaus 25-7 for a 43-21 lead at halftime. The result was never in doubt the rest of the way in the 73-45 victory, which marked a season-high in points scored for Parkland.

Nick Coval led the way offensively with a game-high 21 points and went 10-for-10 from the free-throw line against Emmaus. Jayden Thomas netted 20 points and Zaire Smaltz had 18 points. Robbie Ruisch added nine points, connecting on three 3-pointers.

Parkland was edged late by Executive Education 44-42. Coval tallied 14 points and four assists, while Thomas recorded 13 points and eight rebounds. It was the Trojans’ first loss since falling to Bonner Prendergast on Jan. 30.

Against the Vikings, the Trojans trailed 29-21 at halftime. Central Catholic outscored them 23-16 and took a 52-37 lead after three en route to a 71-52 win, denying Parkland an undefeated East Penn Conference regular season.

Thomas netted a team-best 22 points against Central, while Blake Nassry added 12 points. Coval had six, Ruisch contributed five, Smaltz tallied four and Luke Spang rounded out the scoring with three points.

Parkland finished the regular season 17-5 overall and 15-1 in the conference. The Trojans earned the top seed in the upcoming EPC playoffs. They host the eighth seed, Nazareth, in the quarterfinals on Friday at 7 p.m. The game follows the Nazareth-Parkland girls semifinal, which tips off at 5:30 p.m. at PHS.
