Messenlehner wins two events at Cedar Crest Classic swim meet
The dual meet season has officially ended, and swimmers and divers are preparing for the postseason. The Emmaus boys team ended their schedule with a 122-58 win over Nazareth. Parkland was crowned as the EPC champion as they completed an undefeated season by going 9-0 in conference meets and 12-0 overall this season.
In what could be a preview of the district championship, which is scheduled for March 1-2, Parkland edged the Hornets (8-1 EPC, 10-3 overall) at the Cedar Crest Classic last weekend when the Trojans finished third with a score of 110.6 followed closely by Emmaus, which finished with a score of 108.3 for a fourth-place finish. Upper Dublin (118.3) won the event with Governor Mifflin (112.2) finishing second.
Griffin Messenlehner won the 100-yard butterfly with a personal best time of :52.39 and took second with a time of :53.29 in the 100-yard backstroke.
Against Nazareth (7-2, 8-2), Messenlehner was the lone Emmaus swimmer to win two individual events when he won both the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events.
Logan Shriver also had a big day at the Cedar Crest Classic when he won the 200-yard individual medley and took second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:48.27, just under two seconds behind Governor Mifflin’s Owen Ziolkowski. In the IM, Shriver bested teammate Logan Hartman by just :00.67 with Parkland swimmers finishing in the next three spots.
Sophomore Anderson Borst continued his strong season with a second-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle, setting a personal best time in the event. Borst finished just under a second out of the top spot as Mifflin’s Braden Weise finished at :47.34.
Julian Vlaeminck set personal best times in both the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly when he posted a time of :54.02 in the butterfly to finish second, while his time of 1:52.80 in the 200-freestyle put him seventh.
In relays, the Hornets had a trio of second-place finishes as they finished close behind a team from Governor Mifflin and just ahead of Parkland teams in all three events.
Emmaus’ 200-yard medley team of Hartman, Shriver, Borst, and Messenlehner finished with a time of 1:38.81, leaving them just :00.26 off the pace set by Upper Dublin. The time was good enough to beat out Parkland, who finished third with a time of 1:40.80.
The Hornets were also a close second in the 200-yard freestyle relay as Governor Mifflin won with a time of 1:29.94 and Emmaus clocked in with a finish of 1:30.87. That team was made up of Borst, Garrett Longbons, Vlaeminck, and Messenlehner, who bested the top Parkland team by :00.17 in the relay.
For the 400-yard relay, Vlaeminck, Shriver, Hartman, and Borst teamed up to put together a time of 3:17.99, :02.59 off the pace set by Governor Mifflin, but good enough to finish :04.00 ahead of Parkland.
Divers Robbie Barnes and Nicholas Heffner were unopposed in the meet against Nazareth with Barnes posting a score of 157.80 and Heffner finishing at 83.75. The Cedar Crest Classic does not have a diving competition, so the divers were off, but this week it’s their turn to compete as the swimmers get some time away from the pool. Divers will compete in the EPC Diving Championships at Emmaus High School Saturday.
