LIBERTY HS NEWS By Finn Dougherty
With lingering festivities and the start of a new schedule for students and staff, the atmosphere within the walls of Liberty HS is as lively as can be.
In sports news, both the boys and girls basketball teams qualified for the East Penn Conference playoffs. In a playoff home opener, the boys sneaked away with a 50-38 win over Allentown Central Catholic HS. In an away game at Pocono Mountain West the girls team also won, 50-36.
Both teams were scheduled to play at the PPL center Monday and Tuesday Feb. 12 and 13. The boy’s take on #1 seeded Parkland HS, while the girl’s take on Emmaus HS.
Liberty’s first issue of the student run newspaper, Liberty Life, was distributed Dec. 19, marking the fifth released issue under adviser Ellyce Nieves, a Liberty English teacher. In the span of three years, Nieves has found many different ways to reinvent the importance of reporting on current events in and out of a school environment.
The issue included a wide range of topics, most noteworthy being collaborations between Liberty Life and the Liberty Broadcast Studio. With the help of Nieves and Shaugn Bittner, broadcast and video editing teacher, the series “Stormchasers” was created to highlight high achieving students monthly throughout the year.
The collaboration allowed for both live interviews in the studio and written articles for the newspaper, allowing the accomplishments of those involved to reach a much wider audience.
Bailey Corrigan was featured for a high achievement in volleyball, as she surpassed both 1,000 points and kills in just her junior year. Helena Perera Gonzalez was also featured for her experience as a foreign exchange student transitioning into an American public high school and her experience doing such.
