LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

DeVita drops 23 points on Whitehall

The Emmaus High School girls basketball team had its busiest week of the new calendar year last week. Because of inclement weather postponing some games and cramming them into another week, the Green Hornets played three games in four days from last Tuesday through Friday. They won all four games, two of which were against Eastern Pennsylvania Conference teams, and the other one in nonconference competition. They also started this week with a win.

All four victories were by double figures. It started with a 56-27 win at Whitehall on Tuesday, Jan. 23, then a 61-21 victory against Southern Lehigh two nights later, followed by a 66-43 win over Allen on Friday night, both at home. Emmaus opened this week with a 62-36 win over Pocono Mountain East.

In the win over the Zephyrs, Emmaus jumped out to an early 28-13 lead after one and were ahead 40-19 at halftime, seemingly putting the game away. Gabby DeVita was on fire as she finished with a season-best 23 points, including three 3-pointers. Mya Cooper also finished in double figures with 13 points.

The Green Hornets held the Spartans to single-digit scoring in all four quarters. They outscored them 18-5 in the first quarter and 22-8 in the second stanza to take a commanding 40-13 lead at the intermission. DeVita once again led the offense with 13 points. Cassandra Doemling tallied 12 points and Cooper added 10. Alexis Krum recorded eight points and both Taylor Griffith and Sylvia Sokolofski contributed six points.

The game was closer against the Canaries, at least in the first half as Emmaus outscored them 17-11 in the first quarter and were ahead at halftime 29-19. But the Green Hornets went on a 20-7 run in the third quarter to take control. Sofie Laird was the lone player scoring in double figures with 10 points. There were 11 other players that scored in the game as well, including nine points by Griffith and eight each from DeVita and Julia Adams on senior night.

Emmaus is 10-8 overall and 7-5 in the conference and has three road games this week in the final full week of the regular season as the Hornets were at Central Catholic Tuesday and then at rival Parkland on Friday before finishing the season against Whitehall at home next Monday. The postseason starts later next week with the EPC playoffs.
