Hokendauqua: HPPA offering scholarships

Hokendauqua Park and Playground Association is accepting applications for its $1,000 Warke-Horn Scholarship. At HPPA’s March/April meeting, the organization will review all applications and select one girl and one boy to each receive a $1,000 scholarship.

To be eligible, applicants must be a Class of 2024 high school-eligible graduate; be continuing education in the fall of 2024; have participated in HPPA’s baseball, softball or basketball youth programs; and return the scholarship application form before Feb. 29.

St. John’s United Church of Christ, Mickleys, 2918 MacArthur Road, will offer a Lenten study on the book “Pause: Spending Lent with the Psalms” by Elizabeth F. Caldwell Feb. 21. The event runs 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. and includes a light lunch.

Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3355 MacArthur Road, will hold its spring basket social 9 a.m.-3 p.m. March 2 and again 9 a.m.-1 p.m. March 3.

There will be baskets, gift cards and WOW baskets. There is a cost for regular tickets and also for WOW tickets.

Food items available will be hot dogs, haluski, barbecue, soup and more. There will also be a variety of baked goods.

Whitehall-Coplay Hunger Initiative will hold a free community meal 4-6 p.m. March 19 at Whitehall Bible Fellowship Church, 3300 Seventh St. The meal, for low-income Whitehall Township and Coplay Borough residents, is guaranteed for the first 100 guests.

HPPA has announced registration is now open for the baseball and softball 2024 season. HPPA will be hosting teams for ages K to 18U for girls and K to 19 for boys.

There will be baseball consisting of T-ball and Grasshoppers for ages 4-and-a-half to 8; Biddy, Midget and Knee-Hi for ages 8-15; and Majors for ages 14-18. Softball will consist of coed T-ball or 8U and 10U, 12U, 14U and 18U.

Whitehall Township will hold a spring session of aqua aerobics Tuesdays and Thursdays March 19-May 14 in the natatorium at Whitehall High School, 3800 Mechanicsville Road. There will be no class March 28.

There is a cost for residents and nonresidents.

Whitehall Township will also hold indoor public swim sessions 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesdays March 20-May 15, for Whitehall and Coplay residents only, in the natatorium at WHS. A photo ID proving township or borough residence is required.

No swimming will be held when school is closed for a holiday, teacher in-service or inclement weather.

Children under the age of 10 must be supervised by a parent/guardian. In addition, any child in need of a flotation device must be accompanied by a parent/guardian in the pool.

Mark your calendar: Ironton Rail Trail Oversight Commission will be hosting its annual spring historical walk March 23. Meet 9 a.m. at the red barn at Whitehall Parkway, 4041 Chestnut St.

Hike leaders Bob Abbott and Ray Bieak will take you on an approximately 7-mile walk. Allow around four hours, at a leisurely pace, for this event. Occasional stops will be to view buildings, historical sites and landmarks. It is recommended you bring water, a camera and binoculars.

The event is free and requires no registration.

Hokey Athletic Association will be holding a designer purse bingo April 21 at American Club of Coplay, 300 Cherry St. Doors open 2 p.m., and bingo begins 3 p.m.

There will also be five special bingos, a chance auction and special raffles. The kitchen will be open.

Tickets are cheaper when purchased in advance.

All proceeds will benefit rookie flags, competitive flags, 100 tackles, 120 tackles and cheering.
