Bethlehem Catholic’s quest for a third straight PIAA 3A championship gets underway this week at Hershey’s Giant Center.

The Hawks open the tournament Thursday against Central Dauphin at 6 p.m.

Should they win, it would pit a matchup between District 4 champion Selinsgrove or District 7 runner-up Trinity in Friday’s 2 p.m. quarterfinals.

Hawks’ coach Mike Cole has done his homework already on potential opponents and sees Trinity as a challenge should it come to that.

“I’m thinking Trinity is pretty tough,” said Cole. “They are probably liking their matchup against us. It would be a tough one. I’m not sure even if they would beat us they will go far though. Its just a matchup thing.”

Many people consider District One champion Council Rock South and District 6 champion Central Mountain as the two best teams in the state and fortunately for Becahi, those two teams will likely face each other in the quarters.

That leaves a path for Becahi to see either one of them in Friday night’s 7 p.m. semifinals.

“I see them as two of the best teams,” said Cole. “I like our matchup with Council Rock better than I like it with Central Mountain. Both are tough though.”

Easton is on the bottom half of the bracket, along with the likes of District One runner-up Pennridge and District 7 champion Connellsville.

“I expect the team to perform at states,” Cole of his expectations this weekend. “We will stay focused on our basic goals in practice and hold ourselves accountable to executing on them in competitions. And, if we perform, we will leave Hershey happy.”

The championship and consolation matches are set for 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
