Gallery View: “5 X 5 Show” inspires at Northampton Community College

“The 5 X 5 Show (Ninth Edition),” featuring the works of five regional artists, continues through March 1, Communications Hall Gallery, Northampton Community College, Bethlehem Township.

The “Ninth Edition” exhibition for 2024 focuses on the variety of mediums, subjects, and styles of the works created by the five artists.

The five participating artists working in five different media are: Richard Begbie, photography; Pat Delluva, drawing and printmaking; James A. DePietro, oil and acrylic painting; Barbara Kozero, mosaic and sculpture, and Jacqueline Meyerson, pastel.

Having known the artists for many years and serving with some of them on the Bethlehem Fine Arts Commission, Northampton Community College Director of Art Programs Thomas Shillea says, “It’s a great show for the college and for our students to see the possibilities of working with different materials and different ideas.”

“We’re here to promote the arts and educate a younger generation of future art lovers by exposing them to different medias on display,” says DePietro.

DePietro’s contributions in the show include paintings and mixed media works in his “From the Stream of Consciousness Series,” and “From (We Are) What We Eat Series.”

The “Stream of Consciousness” series is social commentary such as “Covid Triptych: Wash Me Clean.”

“What We Eat” is a friendly and appetizing look at food such as the hamburger and fries depicted in oil and acrylic in “All-American.”

“This seems like the perfect place to bring out our work because it is a college and we’re in an art department,” says Kozero. “It’s nice to be able to influence up-and-coming artists.”

Among Kozero’s works are “Cherish the Earth Buddha,” a colorful mosaic-covered statue, and “Guitar Mosaic,” a mixed media piece created with a discarded guitar soundboard and fretboard and other materials.

Begbie’s “Contemplation,” an archival print on paper, with its organic light and shadows wrapping around architectural elements, is an example of how he skillfully creates abstract works from images captured by his camera.

Master Pastelist Meyerson has chalked up a number of awards with her highly-detailed hyper-realistic pastel pieces. As with her other pastels on display, Myerson’s “Worth The Weight” finds beauty in everyday objects such as candy bars.

Delluva’s experiments with low-tech printmaking includes hand-colored relief prints such as “Little Boy Blue,” a series of TetraPak drypoint prints illustrating nursery rhymes; “Ukrainian Children’s Songs,” and charcoal and conté drawings.

The 5 X 5 Artist Group has presented “The 5 X 5 Show” annually in galleries throughout the Lehigh Valley.

The group’s 2023 exhibit in the Nurture Nature Center, Easton, reflected the nonprofit’s focus on water conservation and science.
