Hurricanes eye playoffs

Liberty will be the only boys’ city team competing in the basketball postseason, which gets underway this week with the East Penn Conference tournament.

The Hurricanes (17-5) are winners of five straight following Monday’s 53-39 win over Nazareth.

It was the final game of the regular season and head coach Nigel Long is hoping his team is just gearing up for another postseason run.

“Every game matters,” said Long. “This league is tough. Every night is a battle. Coming down the stretch our hope is to be playing our best basketball.”

Since losing to Parkland 50-45 on Jan. 24, Liberty has been on a run, but has dealt with some close calls in the process, pulling out a 31-29 buzzer beating win over Freedom last Friday following a Jake Pukszyn put back to register a win over their rivals.

Earlier in the week, Liberty survived a 59-58 battle with Easton, giving them some late game experience in tight contests before the playoffs roll around.

Long knows these type of wins are important, but also being able to compete with top teams like Parkland will come to fruition over the next few weeks of postseason play.

“Looking back at the close games we had this season, there were moments where we struggled offensively,” said Long. “However, I do believe defensively we showed that we are capable of competing with those top teams in our league.”

That postseason run starts on Friday with the quarterfinals of the EPC tournament, where Liberty should host Central Catholic.

The EPC semifinals and finals are set for next week at the PPL Center in Allentown.

Freedom (6-16) and Bethlehem Catholic (7-14) saw their seasons come to an end on Monday night.

The Pates lost to Dieruff 50-44 in their finale, but Becahi finished on a positive note trumping Easton 38-34 to finish the year winning four of their last five games.
