Swim team honors seniors
The Northampton swim team honored their senior swimmers on Tuesday night in the last home meet of the season against Stroudsburg High School. In a mid-meet intermission, Northampton head coach Cullen Mentzell shared stories of future plans and favorite memories as each of the seven senior swimmers made their way down a row of teammates with hugs and high-fives to their waiting parents and family members.
First in the line of honorees was senior Brenna Caley, whose favorite memory, according to Mentzell, was time spent with the team, a common theme among the seniors this year. Next, Allyson Engle made her way down the long line of Northampton varsity swimmers as her coach announced plans to attend Westchester University. Engle mirrored the sentiment of team memories being among her favorites from this year.
Among the honorees from the boys team was Ryan Franke, who holds the 9th all-time best time for the 100-yard Backstroke at Northampton. Ryan fondly remembers working hard for results like medaling at districts in his freshman year. Hard work was also something senior Jacob Ladd will take with him as Mentzell told the crowd about the longtime swimmer and football player’s favorite memory of setting a goal and working to achieve his best 50-yard split. s Senior Stephen Carrasco was announced and made his way down the pool deck to his waiting mom and grandmother, Mentzell commented that among Stevens’s favorite memories was simply hanging out with the team. Teammate Lukas Groller echoed the value the team places on time spent together by naming team pasta parties and breakfasts among the things he will treasure about his years with this squad. As the final senior, Dane Missmer, made his way down the long line of congratulating teammates, Coach Mentzell told the crowd of Dane’s favorite memory, quipping, “This is one I completely appreciate.” Dane fondly recalled swimming 50/50s on New Year’s Day and maybe not always knowing where they were in the set, but knowing he should ‘just keep swimming.’
Northampton made this a special night as they bested Stroudsburg by scores of 115-57 and 128-55 for the girls and boys. Among the highlights for the boys were two first-place finishes by Franke in the 200 and 100 freestyle events. Carrasco claimed a second-place finish in the 50 freestyle. Groller placed 4th in the 100 breaststroke and joined teammates Missmer, Riggins O’Grady, and Shane Foley for a third-place finish in the 200 medley relay. Missmer also placed fourth in the 500 freestyle event, and Ladd placed fourth in the 50 freestyle. In the 100 butterfly, it was Josiah Hippert with Logan Saylor close behind and exactly one second separating their 1-2 finish. Nick Isaac took first for Northampton in the 500 freestyle event with Ethan Brobst pacing close behind in second.
In the boys relay events, Franke and Carrasco joined Hippert and Saylor for a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay, and Hippert, Saylor, and Franke joined Brobst for a first-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay. The team of Gabe Gower, Aidan Kuntz, Tobias Scott, and Brobst completed the Northampton sweep of first-place finishes in the relay events with a win in the 200 medley relay.
Highlights on the girls team include a first-place finish for Caley in the 100 butterfly. It was another first-place finish for Ava Keenan in the 200 freestyle, with teammate Toni Bubier taking second place. Olivia Kuhns was first to the wall in the 50 freestyle, with Sophia Pina in close second, and Gigi Esteban placed first in the 500 freestyle event. Pina and Keenan teamed up with Ava Aulisio and Isabella Kish for a first-place win in the 200 freestyle relay, and Kuhns, Keenan, Pina, and Caley took first in the 400 freestyle relay event.
Looking forward, the team has just two more meets remaining in their regular season. On Feb. 8, they will travel north to Stroudsburg, and on Feb. 13, the team will face their final regular season opponent when they travel to Liberty.
