ACCHS celebrates Catholic Schools Week

Allentown Central Catholic High School celebrates Catholic Schools Week 2024 this week, with each day recognizing a different aspect of Catholic education and holding various events.

The Catholic Schools Week 2024 schedule for the rest of the week is: Jan. 31 - “Celebrate Our Nation,” with a red, white and blue dress down, Feb. 1 - “Celebrating Vocations,” with a future vocation and/or occupation dress down and Feb. 2 - “Celebrating Our Faculty,” with a luncheon for all staff, volunteers and faculty, class color day and a pep rally open to parents 1:30 p.m.

Show your love for Vikette basketball by attending the celebrity bartending event at the Jordan AC, 252 N. Jordan St., Allentown, 5-7 p.m. Feb. 3.

Head coach Kathy Davidowich will bartend all happy hour and you may purchase Vikette basketball magnets at the event. The event is open to all individuals 21 and older for a small charge at the door. Contact JoAnn Roth at 610-295-4040 or joann.roth@rcn.com for more information.

The ACCHS swim and dive team will hold its salsa fundraiser now through Feb. 4. This fundraiser features handcrafted Casa De Jorge Salsa, produced right here in the Lehigh Valley.

Choose from 16 various flavors of salsa. Place your order online at www.salsafundraising.com/category-s/109.htm, select “Allentown Central Catholic Swim and Dive” at checkout and have the salsa shipped right to your address.

The swim and dive team will race their last two regular season meets 4 p.m. Feb. 1, home against East Stroudsburg North and 4 p.m. Feb. 8 away versus Nazareth.

The team recently held its senior night, honoring Class of 2024 swimmers Tyla Block, Melanie Fuentes, Isabel Kehoe-Huck, Amelia Michener and John Tenezaca.

Congratulations also to the most recent Swimmers of the Meet, Priscilla Elias and Kyan Block. Priscilla achieved a personal best in the 100 Free versus Liberty and Kyan also reached a personal best for his 500 Freestyle against Allen.

Viking lacrosse will host its 2024 season kick off party 2-5 p.m. Feb. 3 at Volpe’s Sports Bar, 501 Broad St., Emmaus. There is a cost but all players may attend for free. Attendees may pay at the door via cash or check. The afternoon will include raffle baskets, a 50/50 and a chance to win Viking LAX corn hole boards.

Eastern PA Sports Network will broadcast live 2-3 p.m. at Volpe’s to give a sneak peek at this year’s ACCHS boys lacrosse team. The broadcast will include input from coaches, athletes and a booster club member on the air. RSVP through the link in the Viking Weekly Newsletter or on the school’s social media pages.

Come support our seniors at the remaining winter sports senior nights. Wrestling will have its senior night Jan. 31, girls basketball and cheerleading will have its senior night Feb. 2 and boys basketball and dance team will host its senior night Feb. 5. All these events wonill begin 6:30 p.m. in Rockne Hall.

Shout-out to Jakub Gloc for winning the Colonial League wrestling title at 215 pounds. With this accomplishment and a 14-3 season record, Gloc was recently nominated for The Morning Call’s Athlete of the Week.

Both ACCHS basketball teams recently had players congratulated for their terrific efforts in past games. Forward Abbey Kofroth earned Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Star of the Week after dropping 14 points in a victory over Liberty, nine versus Pocono Mountain West and 10 in the win against Pleasant Valley.

Guard/forward Armani Brickhouse, guard/forward Milly Wolf and guard Annika Spinosa all received honorable mentions.

Guard Jahrel Vigo was also named EPC Star of the Week after scoring a career-record 36 points in the Vikings’ triumph over Pocono Mountain West in double overtime. Vigo also aided his team with 22 points in a win versus Allen.

ACCHS held a Morgan’s Message dedication game before the Vikettes facing Northampton Jan. 26. Morgan’s Message, a nonprofit organization, draws attention to student athlete mental health and reducing stigma. Former Duke Lacrosse player Morgan Rodgers grappled with mental health issues and died from suicide in 2019 and her parents started the organization to honor her and support student athletes. Niche recently voted ACCHS #1 out of 35 for best high school for athletes in the Lehigh Valley!

Central will host its winter open house 2-4 p.m. Feb. 4. Attendees will tour the school, meet the administration, learn about athletics, speak with current students and discover all the wonderful clubs and activities available to students. Any family registering their child Feb. 4 will save $200 off the application fee. The Class of 2024 will have its senior/make up retreat 7:30 a.m. to 2:50 p.m. Feb. 20.

Seniors who have not fulfilled their retreat requirements and will not attend a Kairos retreat should plan on attending this one. The retreat will begin with Mass in the school chapel 7:30 a.m. and attendance will be taken 8 a.m. Students should bring a lunch or money to purchase food at Reading Terminal Market. Retreatants will return by dismissal time. Use the link in ACCHS social media pages to register and parents must complete the required waivers before the retreat.
