PHS boys wrestlers beat Pates, fall to Zephs

The Parkland High School boys wrestling team went 1-1 last week while erasing a three-match losing streak.

The Trojans were tied with Whitehall heading into the final bout last Wednesday, Jan. 17, but the Zephyrs earned a 12-7 decision at 139 to take a 29-26 victory at Parkland. This past Saturday, the Trojans responded the way they had hoped to and were victorious over Freedom 33-25 at home.

Jakob Peterson and Leo Kern both recorded pins for against Whitehall, while Blake Dergham and Michael Gavrilesku earned major decision wins and both Jorge Moya and Faisal Amodu tallied decisions. Parkland was trailing 26-10 with just four bouts to go, but Dergham’s major decision, along with Peterson and Kern’s pins tied the score heading into the final bout. But Trokon Kai picked up a decision at 139 pounds to win the match.

The Trojans started off fast against the Patriots, winning the first three bouts and five of the first six overall. Luis Moya won via forfeit at 107 and Matthew Velez and Dergham both picked up pins to build an 18-0 lead. Kern earned a pin at 133 and Elias Sallit tallied a 7-6 decision at 139 as the advantage went to 27-3. Christopher Toth notched a 5-3 decision at 160 and then, with the match still in doubt at 30-25, Gavrilesku made sure to bring home the win for his team as he won a 5-2 decision at 285.
