LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

DiVita scores 13 points in win over Blue Mountain

The Emmaus High School girls basketball team fell to Bethlehem Catholic last Thursday night 58-40 in an Eastern Pennsylvania Conference game, a game that was moved back two days due to snow.

A game with Whitehall set for the next night was postponed to Tuesday of this week also because of snow. Emmaus had a nonconference game at Blue Mountain this past Saturday morning and defeated the Eagles 60-29 and then followed that up with another road win, this time beating Northampton for the second time this season, 50-39 on Monday night.

A slow first half doomed Emmaus in the loss at Becahi as the Golden Hawks outscored the Hornets 19-8 in the opening quarter and then 17-4 in the second quarter on their way to a 36-12 halftime lead. The Hornets fought back in the second half and made it more respectable with a 16-9 fourth quarter where they outscored Bethlehem Catholic.

Taylor Griffith led Emmaus with 10 points. Cassandra Doemling recorded eight points, Gabby DeVita and Olive Whitney both had six points and each of Mya Cooper and Kayla Snyder added four. Emma Naccarato rounded out the scoring with two points.

Emmaus responded 48 hours later and took it to Blue Mountain with a strong first quarter and a 25-4 lead out of the gate. After outscoring the Eagles 11-5 in the second stanza, the Hornets led 36-9 at halftime.

DeVita led Emmaus with a game-high 13 points. Snyder tallied 11 points and Cooper added 10. Doemling just missed double figures, scoring nine.

Emmaus had to come from behind in its latest game with the Kids, trailing 24-21 at halftime, but used an 11-5 run in the third quarter and then outscored them 18-10 in the final frame to leave as victors.

DeVita recorded a team-best 14 points, including hitting two 3-pointers. Sylvia Sokolofski also tallied double figures with 12 points. Cooper and Snyder added nine points and eight points, respectively.

Emmaus has another busy week this week. The Hornets were at Northampton on Monday, at Whitehall on Tuesday, host Southern Lehigh in a nonconference game Thursday before welcoming Allen for a home conference game the following night.

With seven games left on the schedule Emmaus (7-8 overall; 5-5 EPC) needs four more wins to clinch a District 11 playoff berth. The Hornets will likely have to win at least half of their six remaining league games to have a chance at an EPC playoff spot.
