Falcon boys close in on postseason berth

Despite a stumble Monday night at Pen Argyl, the Falcons (5-5 Colonial, 8-7 overall) renewed their push toward the postseason. Wins against Bangor and Wilson helped their cause as they downed the Slaters 50-45 and then beat the Warriors 50-46 to pick up back-to-back wins for the first time since early December when they opened the year with three straight wins.

Bryan Gonzalez got the Falcons off to a fast start against Bangor (7-3, 7-6) by scoring 11 first quarter points backed by three three-pointers. Salisbury led 15-11 after one quarter and 26-21 at halftime.

The Falcon defense helped to put the game away with a strong third-quarter performance, holding the Slaters to just four points, all of which coming from Exavior Prado as the junior finished with a team-high 16 points. The Falcons put up just six points in the third quarter but held a 32-25 advantage.

Salisbury’s Steven Lozada scored 10 points in the game, all of which came in the second half, including seven in the final quarter. Gonzalez finished with a game-high 18 points, draining four three-pointers along the way.

As usual, Salisbury got contributions up and down the roster. Of the 10 players that entered in the game, nine of them scored at least one point with the bench contributing 16 points on the night.

On Saturday, Salisbury traveled to Wilson (5-5, 6-6) and beat the Warriors 50-46 before dropping a disappointing 20-18 game against Pen Argyl (2-8, 2-12) Monday night at home.

Salisbury is third in the West Division of the Colonial League, which will likely be won by either Palmerton (5-0) or Northwestern Lehigh (4-1). In the battle for a league playoff spot, the Falcons and Wilson are tied for the final spot but the Falcons’ win over the Warriors gives them the tiebreaker.

To reach districts, Salisbury would need to finish with a .500 record overall or in league games. Three more wins would clinch the district berth via overall record. The Falcons have teetered right around the .500 mark all season.

The upcoming schedule has the Falcons hosting Palisades (1-9, 2-11) Thursday before playing at Saucon Valley (6-4, 8-5) Saturday and then at Northern Lehigh (0-9, 2-12) next Tuesday.
