LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Liberty boys knock off Bethlehem Cath.

It was a slow week on the hardwood for area teams, as last week’s snowstorm derailed Friday’s lineup of contests across the Lehigh Valley.

Liberty, however, was able to get back in the win column last Wednesday following a 52-40 win over Allen. The Hurricanes (12-4) were coming off a loss to Nazareth the previous week, so getting back to winning ways was important for Nigel Long’s group.

“After a tough loss at Nazareth last week we needed to turn the page, which I felt like we did a good job of doing,” said Long. “We need to continue to focus on getting better for this final stretch of the season.”

Blake Hargrove led the team with 14 points in the win over the Canaries and Will Palmer added 13 points for Liberty, who now have a three game slate this week, which started with Monday night’s 49-36 win over Bethlehem Catholic.

Hargrove led all scorers with 14 points again and Cade Vermuelen added 10 points for the ‘Canes.

Liberty will see where they stand among the EPC elite on Wednesday when they take on Parkland (11-3), who are undefeated in conference play this year, followed by a Friday night showdown with Dieruff.

“Defensively we need to continue to string stops together,” said Long of where he wants to see the team still improve upon. “Offensively, just keeping being more efficient and valuing each possession.”

Freedom (4-12) pushed Nazareth to overtime on Monday, but lost 51-47 for their fifth straight defeat. The Pates were led by Marcus Brown’s 10 points and Nate Sletvold chipped in nine points in the loss.

Freedom still has Southern Lehigh and Easton on tap this week.

As mentioned Bethlehem Catholic (4-13) lost on Monday night to Liberty. Josh Benka-Coker led the charge with 13 points for the Hawks, who did come into Monday’s contest with some momentum following a 59-43 win over Brandywine over the weekend.

The Hawks next game this week is Friday night against Nazareth.
