City teams suffer setbacks

It was a series of struggles for Bethlehem teams last week, as Bethlehem Catholic and Freedom continued to struggle this season, while Liberty suffered another league setback to Nazareth.

The Hurricanes (10-4) saw their four game winning streak come to an end with a 58-55 loss to Nazareth to suffer their third defeat in the conference and drop them to seventh in the EPC playoff race.

Meanwhile, Bethlehem Catholic (3-11) and Freedom (4-10) haven’t been able to grab their footing this season. The Pates have lost three straight and six out of their last seven games, while the Hawks had a boost of momentum with a two-game win streak in the new year, but couldn’t keep that going with back-to-back losses to Easton and Ridley.

Becahi head coach Scott McClary enjoyed the success the team went through recently and was hoping the Hawks could have kept it going.

“Always tough to lose any games because the players put a ton into this,” said McClary. “The coaches do as well. When you invest yourself in something, you care deeply about results, so losing is always tough, but it is a large part of this young team’s journey forward.

Getting back-to-back wins was important for the boys to experience and get rewarded for the effort and resilience they are showing. It always helps confidence when results are tangible, so we are always working toward putting ourselves in the best position to win.”

Now, McClary wants the team to keep their focus and enjoy each game as they head down the home stretch.

“Honestly, the message has not really changed since day one,” he said. “Win or lose, those are just by-products of what we are putting in along our journey. So our message is to enjoy this high school experience, never take it for granted, stay in a growth mindset, become the best version of yourself as a player, a team, and most importantly as people. On the court, we just continue to identify those aspects we need to give the most attention to and improve on those.”

Becahi gets back into action this week against Emmaus, Pleasant Valley and Brandywine Heights, while Freedom has Central Catholic and Stroudsburg.

Liberty should get back on track with Allen and East Stroudsburg South this week.
