The Right Reverend C. Hopeton Clennon Senior pastor of Central Moravian Church

The Right Reverend C. Hopeton, known as “Hopeton”, Clennon, died January 7, 2024. Born in Kingston, Jamaica he was a son of the late Enos Leopold Clennon and Iris May (Jones) Clennon. He was the husband of Sheila Clennon.

He began his educational journey at the University of the West Indies and the United Theological College of the West Indies. He was ordained in 1983. He ministered to the flock of the Jamaica Province of the Moravian Church. In 1989, he was called to the United States where, he shepherded the congregations of Faith Moravian Church,Washington, D.C.; Schoeneck Moravian Church, Nazareth, Pennsylvania; and the Moravian Church of Downey near Los Angeles, California. In 1998, he was consecrated as the 320th Bishop of the worldwide Moravian Unity. In 2013, he became Senior Pastor for Central Moravian Church, Bethlehem. He was a chaplain of Moravian University and Moravian Theological Seminary.

He was a driving force in the renovation of Camp Hope, Jamaica, the place that shaped his youth. He secured funding to improve elementary schools in Jamaica’s impoverished areas.

An avid traveler, his smile and embrace were beacons of light and love to everyone he encountered world-wide. Faith was the staff he carried.

In addition to his wife, he was survived by a son, Andrew of Bethlehem; two daughters, Danielle Landis and her husband Jared of Limerick and Hope-Elizabeth Clennon-Hibbert and her husband Randy of New Jersey; two grandchildren, Nathaniel and Grace; and two sisters, Evett Joy Barnett of Los Angeles, California, and Bethinia (Betty) Edwards of Jamaica.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Andrea Mae Clennon and Denese Clennon.

Contributions may be made to Central Moravian Church, 73 W. Church St., Bethlehem, PA 18018, for Camp Hope (Jamaica) and the future of the elementary schools in Jamaica.

There will be visitation hours from 5 to 8 p.m. on January 19, 2024, in the Cantelmi Long Funeral Home Inc., 500 Linden St., Bethlehem, PA, 18018.

There will be a funeral service at 11 a.m. on January 20, 2024, at Central Moravian Church, 73 W. Church St., Bethlehem, PA 18018. Burial will be private.
