Q-town takes tourney title

This year’s four-team Salisbury Holiday Tournament included boys basketball teams from Oley Valley, Quakertown and Saucon Valley as well as host Salisbury.

In the opening game, Quakertown downed Oley Valley 51-39 to advance to the championship game and Salisbury followed with a 43-37 nonleague win over Saucon Valley to match up against Quakertown for the championship. The finals saw Quakertown down the Falcons 51-42 to win the tournament.

Against Saucon Valley. The Falcons got balanced scoring with Andrew Grejda leading the way with 11 points. Jake Zellin finished with seven points and Jack Foley and Bryan Gonzalez both had six points in the win.

Salisbury jumped out to a quick lead with hot three-point shooting. The Falcons hit five three-pointers to open the game and led 15-8 at the end of the first quarter, but quickly lost their touch from downtown. Saucon Valley allowed them just four points in the second quarter, while the Panthers offense started to come into shape. Jack Robertson scored five of his game-high 13 points in the second quarter and pushed Saucon Valley to a 25-19 lead at halftime.

Grejda dropped in another three and Drew Petrie also hit from beyond the arc in the third quarter to help close the gap and bring the Falcons to within a point at the end of the third quarter with the Panthers up 32-31.

Picking up the win came down to strong defense and foul shooting. Salisbury’s defense allowed just five points and the Falcons hit on seven of 10 foul shots with Steven Lozada going 4-for-6 and Foley going 3-for-4 to pace the Salisbury win.

Against Quakertown in the finale, Salisbury looked to again beat a team of Panthers, but Q-town took an early lead and using just five players was able to down Salisbury with Miles Lenguere scoring 20 points and Ethan Tomlinson picking up 17.

Salisbury again came out with a hot hand on three-pointers and nailed three of them in the first quarter, with Grejda picking up two of them. But those were the only points in the quarter for Salisbury and the Panthers held a 12-9 lead after the opening quarter and pushed that to a 26-13 lead at halftime.

Zellin hit two threes in the third and Salisbury closed the gap to seven points, but the Falcons were unable to fully catch up to Quakertown, who won the game 51-42.

In all, Salisbury hit nine three-pointers in the game, including four from Zellin, three from Grejda, and two from Brady Leiner. Zellin finished with 12 points and Grejda again had 11 for the Falcons in the loss.

Quakertown’s Tomlinson was named the MVP of the tournament with Grejda and Zellin both named to the All-Tournament Team from Salisbury.

Salisbury (2-3 Colonial, 5-4 overall) returns to the Colonial League portion of its schedule Wednesday against Northern Lehigh and then hosts Notre Dame Green Pond Friday night. Next week opens with a game at Pen Argyl on Tuesday.
