For the second time within the week, the Emmaus High School girls wrestling team competed in a tournament. The Green Hornets went 1-2 overall at the four-team Northampton Quad at Northampton High School on the Saturday before Christmas. In its latest competition, Emmaus matched up against 17 other teams at the Bedlam for the Belt event this past Thursday at the Parkland Pickleball Club.
Emmaus placed eighth overall with a combined team score of 51 points, seven points ahead of ninth-place Sayre. Other local teams competing included Liberty, who won the event, Palisades, Pocono Mountain East, Quakertown, Catasauqua, Tamaqua and Lehighton.
One of the highlights of the tournament for the Green Hornets was Olivya Kroope, who finished in third place overall after pinning Maya Krieger from Bensalem in 1:35 in the third-place match at 170. Kroope won via forfeit in the consolation semifinal round to advance to the third-place matchup.
In other weight classes, Madison Shutkufski and Nadia Mohammed shook off losses in the semifinal round of the championship side and earned fourth-place finishes overall at 148 and 235, respectively. Tiernan Frantz and Petra Perez both finished in sixth place at 112 and 190, respectively.
Ella Antonovich (100), Danielle Rivera (118), Destiny Tejada (124), Sarah Luisi (130), Brynn Koberlein (136), Kadence Yannotti (142) and Allyson Schwalm (155) also competed in the event for the Green Hornets.
Emmaus is back in action and will travel to take on Pocono Mountain West in adual match on Wednesday night. The Green Hornets will then have a little over two weeks off before their next dual at Nazareth on January 18.
