Emmaus girls fall to Liberty, ACC
The Emmaus High School girls basketball team was on the wrong end of a couple of results last week, losing both of its games in Eastern Pennsylvania Conference competition.
On Tuesday, Dec. 19, the Green Hornets were behind a majority of the game, but rallied late to force overtime. They were eventually outscored 8-2 in the overtime period and fell to Liberty on the road, 56-50. In a game against Central Catholic last Friday, Emmaus then fell behind by double digits early after the opening quarter, rallied once again, but fell short of the comeback effort, dropping a home conference game 50-40.
The Green Hornets trailed Liberty 31-23 at halftime and 42-34 after three quarters, but outscored the Hurricanes 14-6 in the fourth quarter and Mya Cooper’s three-pointer with just 12 seconds left in regulation was the shot that brought her team all the way back to tie it and force the overtime period.
Liberty was just too much, however, in extra time and walked off their home floor as victors. Three players finished in double figures in scoring, led by 17 points from freshman Kayla Snyder. Cooper tallied 12 points and Gabby DeVita added 11 for Emmaus. Taylor Griffith recorded six.
Three nights later, Emmaus found itself in a huge hole early as the Vikettes led 18-3 after one quarter. The Hornets found their groove in the second stanza and outscored Central 21-10 to trail 28-24 at halftime. But they never got any closer as the two teams were even in scoring in both the third and fourth quarters.
DeVita led the way for Emmaus with a team-high 12 points and Olive Whitney contributed 10. Molly Driscoll of Central Catholic was unstoppable and had a game-high 26 points.
Emmaus will be playing in the Easton Rotary Club Tournament at Easton Area Middle School this week for two games in two days. The Hornets will take on the host and the reigning District 11 6A champion Red Rovers in their first game Wednesday. Thursday’s opponent is to be determined.
