Coval drops 34 on Northampton

The Parkland High School boys basketball team had just one game last week in this edition’s coverage, and it was an important one for both the program and for an individual, Nick Coval.

The Trojans were hoping to go into their Christmas break riding some positive momentum with a victory, and they accomplished that, taking care of Eastern Pennsylvania Conference rival Northampton on the road last Friday night, 62-54, to remain unbeaten in the conference.

On an individual note, Coval surpassed Adam Lane and moved into second all-time in the program career points list with 1,666. To move into first, he will have to pass his current assistant coach, Sam Iorio, who scored 1,892 career points.

Coval was seemingly unstoppable in the victory over the Kids. He finished with a game-high 34 points. Parkland jumped out on top early, staking to a 17-5 lead early on, but Northampton cut the deficit in half to just six (19-13) after one. The Trojans were on top 35-27 at halftime and then 42-34 after three quarters of play.

The Kids stuck around and were down 44-39 with five minutes to go and then 54-50 with just 1:05 to play. Coval went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line to help seal the deal.

Zaire Smaltz, Blake Nassry and Robbie Ruisch all recorded six points, while Luke Spang and Jayden Thomas both had five points.

Parkland is now 7-1 overall and 6-0 in the league. The Trojans will compete two more times this calendar year and will be in a holiday tournament at Widener University. They will take on Camden East Side on Thursday afternoon and then will play Monsignor Bonner on Saturday evening. Parkland will return to conference action next Thursday night at East Stroudsburg South.
