LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Area teams fail to secure holiday titles

It was a mixed bag of results for Bethlehem’s basketball teams during their trips to holiday tournaments last week. Liberty came away with the most encouraging results from their two games at the Reading Holiday Tournament, taking home a split on the road.

The Hurricanes lost to the hosts 55-46, but followed up the following night with a 51-48 win over Middletown.

Blake Hargrove led the ‘Canes with 19 points in the win over Middletown, while Will Palmer (14 points) and Jake Pukszyn (12 points) finished in double figures.

Pukszyn led the team the first night against Reading, scoring 16 points and Hargrove joining him in double figures with 10 points.

Liberty (7-3) has hit a bump in the road after their undefeated start to the season, losing three of their last four games, including two league losses to Emmaus [54-49] and Pocono Mountain West [59-46] just before the holiday break. The ‘Canes get back in action this Wednesday against Easton and then face Muhlenberg on Saturday afternoon.

Freedom also split their two holiday tournament games taking a 60-26 consolation win over Hatboro-Horsham at the Easton Rotary Classic after falling to Phillipsburg 56-33 in the opener.

Nathaniel Sletvold led the Pates in scoring in both games scoring eight in the loss to P’burg and then dropping 20 points in the win over Hatboro-Horsham.

The Pates (3-9) hope to build some momentum with this Wednesday’s road game against Bethlehem Catholic (1-9).

The Hawks have struggled, losing eight straight games after their showing at the Viking Invitational in Delaware. Becahi battled but fell to Appoquinimink 47-24 and then lost to Tower Hill 40-32.
