Catasauqua Borough Council met Jan. 2 for the reorganization meeting. Municipalities were required to reorganize the first Monday in January, but since that fell on the New Year holiday, local leaders met the following day.
Before being able to vote for their colleagues to fill leadership positions, the newly elected members of council needed to be sworn in. Catasauqua Mayor Barbara Schlegel led Kim Brubaker, Tara Nicholas and Virginia Schlegel in the oath of office.
“You were elected to do a job for the people,” Barbara Schlegel said in an address to the council members.
She noted they must continue working together for the good of the community.
Electing council president and vice president was a seamless affair. Councilman Howard Cunningham was chosen to serve as council president, and Councilman Brian Bartholomew, who joined the meeting remotely by phone, was elected vice president. Both votes were unanimous.
Cunningham previously served as vice president, with Bartholomew as president.
Cunningham then quickly moved through other appointments, including borough Manager Glenn Eckhart, Treasurer Catherine VanDyne and Solicitor Christy Schlottman.
Remington and Vernick Engineers was appointed to continue serving as the borough’s engineers.
Councilwoman Jill Smerdon was appointed to serve as the president pro-tem and the representative to the Catasauqua Area School District Board of Education.
Barbara Schlegel and Cunningham were appointed as representatives to Lehigh Valley International Airport.
Richard Hertzog Jr. was named the fire chief.
Other appointments included the building code official and zoning officer and the fire department officer and driver lists for 2024.
The next borough council meeting will be held 7 p.m. Jan. 16 in the borough municipal complex, 90 Bridge St.
