SHS names student of the week
Q. In what grade are you currently enrolled?
A. I am currently enrolled in 12th grade at Salisbury High School.
Q. Who is in your family? Please provide the first names of your family members: parents, siblings and pets.
A. My family only includes my mother and father, Helen and Roger.
Q. What is your favorite subject? Why?
A. My favorite subject is music, simply because I have been involved with music since middle school. In addition, music, specifically jazz music, has allowed me to connect with my community at a deeper level. Through jazz music, I have been able to meet professors like Dr. Neil Wetzel, renowned musicians such as Adam Nussbaum and students who are all passionate about their craft.
Q. Have you received any special awards or recognition?
A. I have received the Widener University Leadership Award, the RIT award for art and design and became the first Salisbury student to successfully audition for Pennsylvania Music Educator’s Association’s District 10 jazz festival.
Q. Are you involved in any extracurricular activities?
A. I am involved in Salisbury’s class advisory, where I have served as the Class of 2024 president for three years. In addition, I am involved with Salisbury’s marching band, concert band, chorus and jazz band. Oddly, I am also a member of Catasauqua High School’s competitive marching band team. Finally, I am also a member of National Honor Society.
Q. What is your next goal after high school?
A. My goal after high school is to attend a 4-year university to study public relations and economics, while continuing to improve my musical skills.
Q. What do you consider your biggest challenge to date?
A. My biggest challenge was auditioning for PMEA’s District 10 Jazz Festival. This audition was the first time my musical skills would be judged. This essentially meant the skills I have been honing for the majority of my life would finally be tested.
Q. For what would you like to be remembered?
A. I would like to be remembered as a trailblazer in the Salisbury community. Through my class presidency, I have been able to introduce new changes within my community. For instance, the Class of 2024 Advisory has been able to successfully return the community bonfire to Salisbury, an event absent for over five years. The advisory and I have also managed to change the structure of our Homecoming dance, raise over $4,000 in a single year and inspire other class advisories. Furthermore, I hope I can inspire my music peers with my tackling of new musical challenges. Therefore, these new experiences I have introduced will hopefully define my remembrance.
Q. Whom do you admire? Why?
A. I admire all the student musicians I have met throughout my lifetime. These musicians are able to accomplish incredible feats, whether inside or outside of music, despite their student status. These incredible student musicians inspire me to continue to push on with my studies and practice.
Q. Do you have any advice for your peers?
A. My advice for my peers is to simply put yourself out there. There’s countless incredible people all over the world, including within our own local communities. Learning from these people will help enhance our own endeavors, sharpen our world view and understand our community even more.
