Moore narrows search to fill township manager position
At the Moore Township Board of Supervisors meeting Dec. 18, the board noted the search continues for a new township manager.
Last month, Nicholas Steiner tendered his resignation after nearly five years as manager. He received accolades for his work as manager from the board and other township staff.
Steiner was Moore Township’s first full-time township manager. These manager duties had been completed by an elected supervisor serving as the township’s secretary/treasurer. The role evolved and grew to warrant a professional manager.
After the meeting, township official Lois Kerbacher said Steiner “took the role of manager to a new high level. Nick had financial and government experience. He will be difficult to replace.”
Kerbacher expects the supervisors to select a new manager in the coming weeks.
Christina Thomas was appointed as part-time treasurer until the next township manager is appointed.
In other business, the board approved the hiring of Stephen Markley to work in the public works department at $26.81 per hour. The public works department is now fully staffed.
It was noted the department recently completed leaf pickup for 2023 and now is focusing on preparation for winter weather.
In a police department report, the board accepted the resignation of Officer Christian Surjan. The board also approved the hiring of John Fries as a part-time police officer. The department seeks an additional part-time police officer.
In another matter, the board created the parks, recreation and open spaces committee to work together to complete a comprehensive parks, recreation and open spaces plan. The comprehensive plan is necessary to increase township eligibility to successfully apply for grants to assist the township’s park, recreation and open spaces development.
Members of the current park and recreation committee, zoning committee, planning committee and the land and environment preservation committee will have seats on the new committee.
The next Moore Township Board of Supervisors meeting is set for 6 p.m. Jan. 2, 2024, at the township municipal building, 2491 Community Drive.
