Rath earns title

Kollin Rath didn’t miss a beat in winning his second straight Beast of the East tournament over the weekend in Delaware.

After taking third at the Ironman tournament the opening weekend of the season, Rath took home the 150-pound championship with a 2-1 tiebreaker victory over Quakertown’s Collin Gaj.

He was one of two finalists for Bethlehem Catholic, who came away with three medalists and a fifth-place finish.

It was the type of progress the Hawks wanted to see coming off the Ironman, where Rath was the only medalist in a 23rd place finish for the team.

“I thought our team performed better than we did at Ironman,” said head coach Mike Cole. “I saw a noticeable increase in our footwork in the neutral position and our ability to recover position with a sense of urgency. I’d still like to see us increase our probability of scoring from bottom against top caliber opponents. With that, Rath won his match in the finals because he scored from bottom. That one point was the brightest spot of the tournament.”

Rath scored both of his championship winning points by registering escapes, once in the third period to force overtime and then win it in the tiebreaker.

After winning states last year, Rath hasn’t took his foot off the pedal, as the Missouri-bound commit has taken the reigns as the Hawks top wrestler this season.

“Kollin has explosiveness and speed that is outstanding,” said Cole. “His ability to tie together movement, position and attack is what makes him special.”

Charlie Scanlan (157) took second at the Beast, falling to Blair Academy’s Paul Ognissanti by a 15-5 major decision. Scanlan beat four ranked opponents en route to his second place finish. Meanwhile, Keanu Dillard (120) finished in fourth following a 3-1 sudden victory loss to Landon Sidun of Norwin in the medal round.

The Hawks host Freedom on Wednesday in their only action until they host the Tony Iasiello Christmas City Tournament on Dec. 28 and 29.

Freedom and Liberty both were dealt losses last week, as the Pates (4-3) dropped a 51-18 match to Nazareth last week. Liberty (1-1) lost to Becahi 48-21 last week. The Hurricanes take on Parkland on Wednesday before they get ready to host the Bethlehem Holiday Wrestling Classic on the 28th and 29th as well.
