Graff, K-Kids off to a hot start on the courts
For Northampton’s Brody Graff, his team’s 5-1 start is truly about a team effort.
“I think our start has been about everyone contributing from guys playing the whole game to guys getting a few minutes,” said the senior. “Everyone has bought into brining effort and energy every day.”
After an opening-game loss to Emmaus (58-35), the Konkrete Kids reeled off five-straight victories against Easton (59-26), Bangor (53-42), Allentown Central Catholic (47-40), and Pleasant Valley (69-38). (See game vs. Freedom below.)
Graff is the team’s leading scorer, averaging 13 points per game. Fellow senior J.J. Kolumber has chipped in with 10 points per game. Others who have been regular contributors have been seniors Tristen Pinnock and Trent Moyer and sophomores Noan Walakovits and Brady Simock.
According to Graff, trust in each other has been a key to their early success. The Kids began last season with a 2-3 mark.
“A big difference from this year to last year is just our overall confidence,” he added. “Our whole lineup last year was playing our first varsity games. This year, we have many players back with a second year of experience.
“We have a good senior group, and sophomores Noah Walakovits and Brady Simock are young, but they still have great confidence. They know it is OK to make a mistake and use it as a leaning moment.”
Second-year head coach Matt Scholl has watched his players carry out his philosophy.
“We have always preached a team effort and sharing the ball,” stated Scholl. “They have bought into it, and it is paying off.”
The Kids will be tested this week with games against Freedom and Parkland. Yet, Graff believes his team can overcome any obstacles ahead.
“I think our team chemistry is very high off the court with ball movement and knowing each other’s tendencies in certain situations,” said Graff. “We are always sending jokes in our group chats and messing around with our coaches, which brings us together. It helps when things are getting tense.”
